What Is a Step-Up SIP and Why It’s Powerful
A step-up SIP increases your investment each year in line with your income. The long-term impact is surprising.
On this page
A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) automatically increases your monthly SIP amount at regular intervals — usually once a year — by a fixed percentage or amount.
Why it’s so effective
Most people’s income rises each year, but their investment often stays flat. A step-up fixes that: as you earn more, you invest more, without having to remember to do it. Because the extra amounts compound over decades, the effect on your final corpus is large.
A simple illustration
Imagine two investors starting a ₹10,000 SIP. One keeps it flat; the other steps it up 10% a year. Over 20+ years, the step-up investor can end up with a substantially bigger corpus — purely from small, automatic annual increases. See it with the step-up calculator versus the plain SIP calculator.
How to use it
- Set a yearly step-up (e.g. 5–10%) when starting a SIP, or add one to an existing SIP.
- Align the percentage with your expected salary growth.
- Review annually and adjust if your income changes.
A step-up SIP is one of the simplest ways to beat inflation and reach bigger goals without feeling the pinch. It’s a planning tool, not a guarantee of returns.
