Understanding the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
A government scheme for a girl child’s future with attractive, tax-free returns. Here’s how SSY works.
On this page
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government savings scheme aimed at securing a girl child’s future — especially education and marriage — with one of the most attractive tax-free returns among sovereign-safe options.
How it works
- Who can open — a parent/guardian for a girl child below a specified age (one account per girl, up to two girls per family, with twin exceptions).
- Contributions — a minimum and maximum annual deposit, made for a set number of years (currently 15 years from opening).
- Interest — a government-declared rate (historically higher than PPF), compounded annually.
- Maturity — the account matures after a long term (currently 21 years from opening), with partial withdrawal allowed for higher education after the girl turns 18.
The tax advantage
SSY typically enjoys EEE status — the investment qualifies for Section 80C, and both the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free (confirm current rules). Combined with the high rate and the power of long-term compounding, it’s a strong building block for a girl child’s goals.
Points to keep in mind
- Long lock-in — the money is committed for the long term, by design.
- Fixed-income — safe but not equity-like growth; for very long goals, many parents also run equity SIPs alongside SSY for higher potential returns.
- Discipline — a minimum annual deposit is needed to keep the account active.
Where it fits
SSY is an excellent safe, tax-free anchor for a girl child’s long-term goals — ideally paired with equity SIPs for growth. See our guide on saving for your child. Confirm current rates and rules. Education only, not a recommendation.
