Understanding Your CIBIL Credit Score
Your credit score quietly shapes your loan rates and approvals. Here’s what it is and how to improve it.

A credit score (CIBIL is the best-known in India) is a three-digit number, usually 300–900, that lenders use to judge how reliably you repay debt. A higher score means easier approvals and better interest rates.
What affects your score
- Repayment history — paying EMIs and credit-card bills on time is the biggest factor.
- Credit utilisation — using a large share of your card limit hurts; keep it low.
- Credit mix and age — a healthy mix of loans and longer history help.
- New enquiries — many loan applications in a short span can lower the score.
What is a good score?
Broadly, 750+ is considered strong and usually gets you the best rates; below ~650 can mean higher rates or rejections.
How to improve it
Pay every bill on time, keep card utilisation low, avoid unnecessary loan applications, and check your report yearly for errors. Improving a score takes months of consistent behaviour — there’s no instant fix.
A strong credit score saves real money over a lifetime of loans — and frees up more of your income to invest.
