SCSS for Senior Citizens — Safe Regular Income
The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme offers safe, high-interest regular income for retirees. Here’s how it works.
On this page
The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) is a government-backed savings scheme designed to give retirees safe, regular income at an attractive interest rate. For the post-retirement safe bucket, it’s one of the best options available.
Who it’s for
Individuals aged 60 and above (with some exceptions for early retirees). It’s meant specifically for retirees seeking capital safety and steady payouts rather than growth.
How it works
- Lump-sum deposit up to a specified maximum (the cap has been raised in recent years).
- Government-set interest rate — among the highest for a sovereign-safe product — paid out quarterly, giving regular income.
- Tenure — 5 years, extendable.
- Section 80C benefit on the investment (old regime), though the interest is taxable.
Why retirees like it
- Capital safety — government-backed, so very low risk.
- Regular income — quarterly interest supports monthly expenses.
- Better rate than many comparable safe options.
Points to note
- Interest is taxable, and TDS applies above a threshold.
- Premature withdrawal is allowed with a penalty.
- Not inflation-beating long-term — like all fixed-income, returns may lag inflation over decades, so it’s for income/safety, not growth.
Where it fits
SCSS is excellent for the safe, income-generating portion of a retiree’s portfolio. Many retirees combine it with an annuity and a conservative SWP from mutual funds for a mix of safety, income and some growth. Confirm current rates/limits. Education only, not a recommendation.
