Nifty 50, explained
The Nifty 50 is the NSE’s flagship index of 50 large, liquid Indian companies across sectors. It’s the most-tracked benchmark for the Indian equity market — when people ask “how’s the market?”, the Nifty is usually the answer.
How it’s calculated
The Nifty 50 is free-float market-cap-weighted — bigger companies (by freely tradable market cap) influence it more. It’s reviewed periodically, with constituents added or removed to keep it representative.
Nifty vs Sensex
The Nifty 50 tracks 50 NSE companies; the Sensex tracks 30 BSE companies. Both represent the large-cap market and move together — the Nifty is simply broader.
How to invest in the Nifty 50
You can’t buy an index directly, but you can track it cheaply through a Nifty 50 index fund or a Nifty 50 ETF, or buy its constituent stocks — all from one free account on ROAR.
