What Is PMS (Portfolio Management Services) and Who Is It For?

PMS offers personalised, professionally managed portfolios — but with a high entry barrier. Here’s the overview.

What Is PMS (Portfolio Management Services) and Who Is It For?
On this page

Portfolio Management Services (PMS) is a professionally managed, personalised investment service for high-net-worth investors. Unlike a mutual fund, where you own units of a pooled fund, in PMS you own the individual securities directly in your own demat account.

How PMS differs from mutual funds

  • Personalisation — the portfolio can be tailored to you, not a one-size-fits-all scheme.
  • Direct ownership — stocks are held in your name.
  • Minimum investment — SEBI mandates a high minimum (₹50 lakh), so PMS targets HNIs.
  • Fees — often a fixed fee plus a performance fee, generally higher than mutual funds.

Discretionary vs non-discretionary

In discretionary PMS the manager makes decisions for you; in non-discretionary PMS they advise and you approve each trade.

Is it worth it?

PMS offers customisation and transparency of holdings, but higher fees and minimums, plus taxation on each underlying transaction, mean it isn’t automatically better than a low-cost fund. For most retail investors, diversified mutual funds or a portfolio of index funds achieve similar goals far more cheaply.

Compare PMS, AIFs and funds on cost, transparency and fit. This is general education, not a recommendation.
