Understanding Thematic and Sectoral Funds

These funds bet on a single theme or sector — higher potential, higher risk. Here’s how to use them wisely.

Understanding Thematic and Sectoral Funds
On this page

Thematic and sectoral funds concentrate on a single theme (e.g. consumption, manufacturing) or sector (e.g. banking, technology, healthcare). They offer focused exposure — and concentrated risk.

Sectoral vs thematic

  • Sectoral funds invest in one specific sector — e.g. all banking, all IT, all pharma.
  • Thematic funds are a bit broader, investing across sectors tied to a theme (e.g. "consumption" spans FMCG, retail, autos; "manufacturing" spans several industries).

Both are far more concentrated than a diversified equity fund.

The appeal — and the risk

  • Appeal — if you have a strong view that a sector/theme will outperform, these funds give amplified exposure. In a sector’s upcycle, they can deliver outsized returns.
  • The risk — concentration cuts both ways. When the sector/theme falls out of favour, these funds can underperform badly for years. You lose the cushion of diversification, and the fund manager can’t move away from the mandate even if the sector struggles.

The timing trap

Investors often pile into a sector fund after it has already done well (chasing past returns), just as the cycle turns — then suffer the downturn. Sector cycles are hard to time.

How to use them wisely

  • Keep them a small "satellite" — a limited slice (often 5–10%) of your portfolio, around a diversified core.
  • Have genuine conviction, not just FOMO from recent returns.
  • Be patient and prepared for volatility — and to be wrong.
  • Most investors are better served by diversified flexi-cap funds that let the manager rotate across sectors.

The takeaway

Thematic/sectoral funds are high-conviction, high-risk tools — useful in small doses for investors with a real view, dangerous as a core holding or a performance-chase. Education only, not a recommendation.
