Understanding Order Types — Market, Limit, SL and More

Market, limit, stop-loss, OCO — the order type you choose decides how your trade fills. Here’s a clear rundown.

On this page

The order type you choose controls how and at what price your trade executes. Using the right one avoids surprises. Here are the essentials.

The basic two

  • Market order — buy/sell immediately at the best available price. Guarantees execution, not price; fine for liquid stocks, risky in illiquid ones (you can pay a lot via slippage).
  • Limit order — buy/sell only at your specified price or better. Guarantees price, not execution; may not fill if the market doesn’t reach it.

Stop and conditional orders

  • Stop-loss — triggers an order when a price level is hit, to cap losses or protect gains.
  • OCO (One-Cancels-Other) — place a target and a stop together; whichever triggers first cancels the other.
  • GTT — a long-validity trigger order that sits until your price is hit.

Order modifiers

  • IOC (Immediate-or-Cancel) — fill whatever it can instantly, cancel the rest.
  • Disclosed quantity — show only part of a large order to the market at a time, to reduce impact.

Choosing wisely

  • Liquid stock, want certainty of execution → market order.
  • Want a specific price / illiquid stock → limit order.
  • Protecting a position → stop-loss (prefer market-type for protection).
  • Set-and-forget entry/exit → GTT.

Matching the order type to your intent — speed vs price, protection vs entry — is a basic but important trading skill. Education only, not a recommendation.
