Growth vs IDCW Option in Mutual Funds — Which to Choose

Every mutual fund offers a Growth and an IDCW option. The choice affects your compounding and tax. Here’s how to decide.

Growth vs IDCW Option in Mutual Funds — Which to Choose
On this page

When you invest in a mutual fund, you choose between two options: Growth and IDCW (Income Distribution cum Capital Withdrawal, formerly called the “dividend” option). They hold the same portfolio — only how profits are handled differs.

Growth option

Profits stay invested, so your NAV rises and gains compound within the fund. You realise returns only when you redeem. For long-term wealth creation, Growth is usually the better choice because nothing is pulled out to interrupt compounding.

IDCW option

The fund periodically pays out part of the gains to you as cash. But this isn’t “extra” money — the NAV falls by the payout amount, so it’s really your own capital/gains being returned. IDCW payouts are taxed at your slab rate in the year received.

Which to pick

  • Growth — for long-term goals and maximum compounding (most investors).
  • IDCW — only if you specifically need periodic cash flow — though a SWP from a Growth plan is often more tax-efficient for regular income.

Bottom line

For wealth creation, Growth almost always wins. If you need income, consider a Growth option with an SWP rather than IDCW. Taxation depends on fund type and holding period — see LTCG. Education only, not advice.
