Gold vs Equity vs FD — Where Should You Invest?
Gold, equity and fixed deposits each play a different role. Here’s how they compare and how to use them together.

Gold, equity and fixed deposits aren’t really competitors — they do different jobs. Understanding each helps you combine them, rather than pick just one.
Fixed deposits — safety
An FD offers a guaranteed, fixed return with capital protection. Great for short-term goals and your emergency fund, but returns are modest and interest is taxed yearly.
Equity — long-term growth
Stocks and equity mutual funds have historically delivered the highest long-term returns, with volatility along the way. Best for goals 5+ years away, ideally via a SIP.
Gold — a diversifier
Gold often rises when equities fall, acting as a safe haven. It’s a stabiliser, not a growth engine. For investing, Sovereign Gold Bonds or gold ETFs beat physical gold.
Use them together
A sensible mix might be: equity for growth, debt/FDs for stability and near-term goals, and a small gold allocation (often 5–10%) for diversification. The right split depends on your horizon and risk tolerance.
