Digital Gold vs Gold ETF vs Sovereign Gold Bonds
Want gold exposure without a locker? Here’s how digital gold, gold ETFs and SGBs compare.

You no longer need physical gold to invest in it. Three popular paperless routes each suit different needs.
Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)
SGBs are government bonds denominated in grams of gold. They track the gold price and pay a small fixed interest, with no storage cost. They have a long maturity (with an exit window), and capital gains on redemption at maturity have historically been tax-free — making them attractive for long-term holders. See our SGB guide.
Gold ETFs
A gold ETF trades on the exchange and tracks the gold price, held in your demat account. It’s liquid and easy to buy/sell any time the market is open, with a small expense ratio but no interest.
Digital gold
Digital gold lets you buy tiny amounts online, backed by physical gold held by a provider. It’s convenient and accessible, but it’s not regulated like exchange products, and spreads/charges vary — read the terms.
Which to choose
- Long-term hold → SGB (interest + tax edge at maturity).
- Liquidity / trading → gold ETF.
- Small, flexible amounts → digital gold.
Most investors keep gold as a small diversifier (often 5–10%). See gold investment options. Education only, not advice.
